486 by Swat Kat is a free techno display font built from rigid, squared strokes, broad uprights, and stark right-angle turns. The repeated rectangular shapes recall modular electronic panels.
Digital graphics make especially good use of this construction, including game interfaces, electronic music artwork, technology event posters, and science-fiction merchandise rooted in early computer hardware. It is most convincing in game interfaces, where the lettering can become part of a digital control panel rather than serving as ordinary text.
