Author's note

Ancient Geek font by Matthew Welch is a free decorative Greek typeface that channels the bold, carved feel of stone inscriptions. Its angular letterforms, straight cuts, and chunky strokes feel like they’ve been chiseled into marble, giving text a strong, ceremonial presence. The tight rhythm and clean geometry keep it legible even at larger sizes, so headlines feel loud and organized rather than chaotic.

Using Ancient Geek, you can bring mythic flavor to posters, game titles, campus events, fraternity or sorority graphics, T‑shirts, and themed party invitations. This free font shines when you set it large and give it room to breathe, then pair it with a simple modern sans for body copy to keep everything readable and on-brand.

--

The font maps Greek glyphs to Latin letters based on visual similarity rather than phonetic value.

Greek letters that had no visual counterpart among Latin letters were omitted, and the remaining character positions were filled with the standard Latin alphabet.

As a result, typing Latin text produces output that appears to use Greek-shaped characters while remaining perfectly readable English.
