Author's note

ARB 66 Neon Block JUN-37 from The Fontry is a free retro display font with massive squared letters and the blunt impact of old entertainment signage. The forms are tightly packed, with rounded outer corners and tall slot-like openings that keep the shapes from becoming solid masses. The weight is unapologetic.

Illustrated marquees, vintage-style arrows, and glowing sign graphics can echo its broad geometry, making it useful for nightclub posters, arcade branding, and music merchandise. It is strongest when the lettering becomes part of the sign itself, especially in bold event titles or venue names.

Beginning in January 1932, at the request of then-editor E. Thomas Kelly, Becker supplied the new Art and Design section of SIGNS of the Times magazine with one alphabet per month. The project was expected to last only two years but instead ran for 27 years, ending two months before Becker’s death in 1959, with a total of 320 alphabets.

In late 1941, 100 of these alphabets were compiled and published in book form under the title 100 Alphabets by Alf R. Becker.

Published in June 1937, Neonline Block was alphabet No. 66 in Alf R. Becker’s SIGNS of the Times series.
