Author's note

Block Bold, created by Max Clayton Clowes of FontStruct, is a free geometric dingbat font whose compact square modules form stepped symbols with a distinctly early-digital look rather than conventional letters. Crisp right angles and open gaps sharpen the checkerboard effect.

Game interface graphics are the most convincing setting for these tiled forms, since the hard grid resembles maze pieces, status markers, and simple on-screen controls. Technology posters can also use these forms, and in electronic music artwork or pixel-inspired merchandise the repeating square motif can become an icon, emblem, or fragment of a larger pattern within a modular product system.
