Author's note

Chaucerian Initials by David F. Nalle of Scriptorium Fonts is a free medieval initial font built around framed, richly ornamented capitals. Its dense vine forms, blunt outlines, and hand-cut irregularities recall decorated manuscript letters and early printed woodcuts.

The foliage can continue into illustrated borders for historical publishing or fantasy game art, making each capital part of the picture. It also fits museum event invitations and packaging for products with an old-world craft theme. In an emblem or poster, the enclosed letter can function like a carved badge rather than ordinary text.
