Author's note

Expressway by Ray Larabie of Typodermic Fonts Inc. is a free modern sans serif with broad, open letterforms and an understated technical cast. Its strokes are clean and mostly even, with gently rounded curves set against firm verticals and diagonals. The generous lowercase proportions keep the design direct and contemporary.

Transport companies and urban service brands could use it for signage, wayfinding, and digital interfaces, where its orderly construction suits practical information. Those same streamlined forms also fit automotive packaging, linking each application through a crisp industrial sensibility.

Expressway is a sans-serif font family inspired by the U.S. Department of Transportation FHWA Series of Standard Alphabets, also known as Highway Gothic. Since the mid-twentieth century, this has been the font most commonly used on road signs in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Turkey, Spain, Venezuela, the Netherlands, Brazil, Argentina, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Mongolia, and New Zealand. Expressway does not rigidly follow government specifications.

The family contains seven weights, two widths, and italics, for a total of 28 styles.

- Old-style and monospaced numerals
- Monospaced currency, mathematical, and fraction symbols
- Support for almost all current Latin-based languages, as well as Cyrillic languages, Greek, and Pan-Nigerian

The font includes a desktop license that permits free commercial use. It allows installation on a computer and use in posters, web graphics, game graphics, T-shirts, videos, signs, logos, and other permitted materials. The license agreement provides further details.

Uses such as embedding the font in an app or ebook, using it on the web, or other uses not covered by the desktop license require a separate license. The linked page lists distributors offering different license types.
