Author's note

Faber Sans Pro Halbfett by Ingo Zimmermann of ingoFont Augsburg is a free display sans serif with tall, assertive letters and an unusually lively silhouette. Broad circular forms sit beside narrow strokes, and the sharply pointed A and M give the otherwise clean design a cut-paper edge.

Poster design is its clearest setting, especially for cultural events and music programs that benefit from oversized, unconventional typography. It can also give fashion branding and magazine covers a crisp but eccentric voice. The pointed peaks and sweeping curves can echo angular collage shapes or bold geometric illustration, making the lettering part of the artwork rather than a neutral caption.

Faber Sans Pro combines two typefaces: a standard sans serif and a stylistic alternate with characters based on uncial scripts.

The original sans serif, Faber Eins & Zwei, was developed in 1996. It was revised in 2010 and updated to support current font technology.

The basic typeface is a classic-modern sans serif influenced by Futura by Paul Renner and Gill Sans by Eric Gill. Its capital letters are based on Roman Capitalis, while its lowercase letters use humanistic proportions.

The stylistic alternate includes redesigned forms of a, e, f, g, l, t, and u based on late antique and early medieval uncial scripts. The alternate r has a pointed form. OpenType technology combines both typefaces in one font. The stylistic alternates can be accessed through Discretionary Ligatures, Stylistic Alternates, or the glyph panel.

Faber Sans Pro includes a true italic. Its italic characters are based on handwriting styles rather than simply being slanted versions of the upright characters. The italic forms of a and g have distinct handwritten designs.

All ingoFonts fonts can be downloaded free of charge. The downloadable files contain a reduced version with only uppercase and lowercase letters from A to Z and a to z.

The complete font, including numerals, umlauts, punctuation, and ligatures, is available only upon purchase.
