Author's note

Faber Sans Pro by Ingo Zimmermann of ingoFont Augsburg is a free light sans serif with tall proportions. Its fine strokes shift subtly in width, giving the capitals a crisp, engraved quality. Broad round letters and sharply pointed forms create a measured but varied rhythm.

Editorial titles are its strongest setting, especially for fashion magazines, cultural programs, and exhibition posters. The refined lines also suit cosmetics packaging and contemporary luxury projects.

Faber Sans Pro consists of two fonts: a standard sans serif and a stylistic alternate with uncial script-oriented characters.

The original sans serif, “Faber Eins & Zwei,” was developed in 1996. In 2010, it was revised and updated for current font technology.

The basic typeface is a classic-modern sans serif influenced by early twentieth-century typefaces, including Futura by Paul Renner and Gill Sans by Eric Gill. Roman Capitalis influenced the proportions of the capital letters, while humanistic minuscule script influenced the lowercase characters.

The stylistic alternates for a, e, f, g, l, t, and u are based on uncial scripts from late antiquity and the early Middle Ages. The stylistic alternate form of r has a pointed design. OpenType technology combines both typefaces in one font. The stylistic alternates can be accessed through Discretionary Ligatures, Stylistic Alternates, or the glyph panel.

Faber Sans Pro includes a true italic. Its italic characters are based on handwriting styles rather than being slanted versions of the upright characters. The italic designs are rounder, with more fluid strokes; the handwritten influence is particularly evident in a and g.

The fonts are available as free downloads from ingoFonts. The downloadable files contain only a reduced font with uppercase and lowercase letters from A to Z and a to z.

The complete font, including numerals, umlauts, punctuation, and ligatures, is available only by order and payment.
