Author's note

Faber Sans Pro Schwer by Ingo Zimmermann of ingoFont Augsburg is a free heavy sans serif with broad capitals and compact lowercase forms. Its substantial weight retains open interiors and a clean silhouette. The sharply peaked A and M give the design extra bite.

Posters are its clearest setting, especially for cultural events and music promotions seeking forceful contemporary lettering. The same decisive shapes suit sports branding and merchandise, where the type becomes a graphic emblem. Across these uses, broad proportions provide the common thread.

Faber Sans Pro consists of two typefaces: a standard sans serif and a stylistic alternate with characters based on uncial scripts.

The idea for the sans serif Faber Eins & Zwei originated in 1996. In 2010, the typeface underwent a fundamental revision and was updated for current font technology.

The basic typeface is a classic-modern sans serif influenced by early twentieth-century typefaces such as Futura by Paul Renner and Gill Sans by Eric Gill. Roman Capitalis provided the model for the capital letters, while the lowercase letters are based on the proportions of humanistic minuscule.

The stylistic alternate includes alternate forms of the letters a, e, f, g, l, t, and u based on uncial scripts from late antiquity and the early Middle Ages. The alternate r also has a distinct design. OpenType technology combines both typefaces in one font. The stylistic alternates can be accessed through Discretionary Ligatures, Stylistic Alternates, or the glyph panel.

Faber Sans Pro includes a true italic. The italic characters are based on handwriting styles rather than simply being slanted versions of the upright characters. They are rounder, with a more fluent stroke flow, and some letters, particularly a and g, have distinct handwritten designs.

All ingoFonts fonts are available as free downloads. The downloadable files contain a reduced version with only uppercase and lowercase letters from A to Z and a to z.

The complete font, including numerals, umlauts, punctuation, and ligatures, is available by purchase.
