Author's note

Glagolitsa by Daniel Poeira is a free historic display font based on the forms of the Glagolitic alphabet, the oldest known Slavic alphabet. Its letters use sharp wedges, heavy verticals, and unusual circular or geometric shapes that give the design an archaic, manuscript-like appearance. The forms feel ceremonial and strongly constructed.

That historical character suits museum graphics, book covers, cultural posters, and educational material dealing with Slavic history or early writing systems. It can also support fantasy or medieval-themed games when an unfamiliar ancient script is appropriate. The alphabet itself can become part of the visual subject rather than simply functioning as neutral lettering.

The Glagolitic alphabet, also known as Glagolitsa, is the oldest known Slavic alphabet. Although it is commonly attributed to Saints Cyril and Methodius and the introduction of Christianity, its origin is uncertain.

The medieval text “Pannonian Life of Constantine” records that the Slavs were already literate at the time of Cyril’s mission: “During a mission to the Crimea in 860, he was shown a Gospel and Psalter written in Rus letters. Saint Cyril reportedly had not seen these before but learned to read them surprisingly quickly” (Cubberley, 1996).
