Author's note

Gotische Initialen, designed by Dieter Steffmann of Typographer Mediengestaltung, is a free medieval initial font built from ornate capitals enclosed in square frames. Each letter combines broad blackletter strokes with curling leaves and dotted details.

Historical book covers are its strongest setting, with the framed forms also fitting museum posters, heraldic event graphics, and fantasy game packaging. In publishing, these initials can open chapters like compact woodcut illustrations, tying the lettering directly to period ornament rather than treating it as ordinary text.
