John Hancock CP, created by Charles Williams Smith of Claude, is a free high-contrast display serif with stately proportions, fine hairlines, and crisp, unbracketed serifs. Its severe silhouette recalls classic Didone display type.
Magazine mastheads are its strongest setting, since the tall forms and dramatic stroke changes establish a formal editorial voice immediately on the printed page. The same engraved quality also suits book covers, formal invitations, and premium packaging for heritage products, luxury goods, or traditional hospitality. Across these uses, its classical fashion and publishing character is especially convincing for literary subjects, period-themed events, and brands built around tradition and a sense of ceremony.
