Railroad Roman, Benn Coifman's free serif caps font from 1994, channels old railroad lettering with broad, slab-like forms and soft notched curves. The letters feel built for depot signs and timetables: sturdy, upright, and slightly ornamental, with rounded joins that keep the weight from turning blunt.
That makes it a natural free font for western title cards, heritage branding, poster headlines, book covers, and menu mastheads where a touch of rail-era Americana helps set the mood. It also works well for short monograms or drop caps, because the caps carry so much character in their heavy blocks and scooped details.
