Author's note
Vollkorn Bold by Friedrich Althausen is a free bold serif with broad, sturdy letterforms and an old-style warmth. Its substantial strokes meet compact, softly bracketed serifs, and the rounded letters retain a gently calligraphic shape. Slight irregularities at the stroke ends keep the design from looking mechanical.
Book covers are its strongest setting, where the dense silhouette can give a title an authoritative but approachable voice, and it also suits literary posters and heritage food packaging. In magazines and other editorial work, the robust shapes can turn section openers or pull quotes into a visual link with traditional print.
