Author's note

Africain font by M. Klein is a free tribal African dingbat typeface that packs a strip of bold, inky illustrations into your keyboard. Each glyph feels like a tiny woodcut: patterned pots, ceremonial figures, shields, animals, and textiles rendered in stark black silhouettes with dense ornamental detail. The icons have a hand-carved, slightly rough edge that gives layouts a tactile, crafted energy instead of a flat, clip-art look.

Using Africain, you can quickly build rich visual borders, badges, and motifs for festival posters, cultural event branding, book covers, educational worksheets, packaging, and travel or history zines. This free font shines when the icons are used large enough to reveal the intricate patterns; pair them with a simple geometric sans serif to keep the typography clean while the artwork carries the storytelling.
