Author's note

Altea font by PJL is a free retro display typeface that looks like it’s been pulled straight off a sun-faded poster. Chunky letterforms with carved inner lines and rough, inky edges create a layered, almost three-dimensional feel, like wood type that’s been printed a few too many times. The spacing is generous and steady, so even with its busy interior detailing, Altea stays legible and bold from a distance.

Using Altea, you get instant character for gig posters, vintage-style packaging, book or zine covers, bar or café signage, event titles, and bold logos that need an edge of grit. This free font shines when used large, where those inner strokes and distressed contours can really show. Pair Altea with a simple geometric sans-serif in smaller text to keep layouts balanced and let its retro personality do the heavy lifting.
