Author's note

Celtic Eels font by West Wind Fonts is a free gothic initials typeface that turns every letter into a miniature illuminated panel. Dense black squares are carved with pale, twisting knots and serpentine curves, like worn ink pressed into old parchment. The letters feel tactile and engraved, with tangled lines that suggest medieval manuscripts, stone carvings, and stormy coastlines all at once.

Using Celtic Eels, a single character can anchor fantasy book covers, tabletop RPG rulebooks, historical posters, pub or meadery logos, album artwork, and artisan packaging. This free font shines as a dramatic drop cap or monogram, especially at large sizes where the interlaced details can breathe. Pair it with a clean, understated serif or sans for supporting text to keep the ornate initials in the spotlight.
