Author's note

Eisenbahn font by Dieter Steffmann of Typographer Mediengestaltung is a free dingbat typeface that turns every keystroke into tiny, inky silhouettes of vintage trains. Steam engines, cargo cars, tenders, and carriages line up like a miniature railway, with crisp outlines and charming, slightly chunky forms that read clearly even at small sizes. There’s a nostalgic, mechanical feel to the shapes, as if they were cut from old railway signage or ticket illustrations.

Using Eisenbahn, you can build playful train borders, dividers, and pictograms for children’s books, classroom materials, model railway flyers, birthday invitations, themed posters, and packaging for toys or candy. This free font also works beautifully in signage for events or museum exhibits when set large so each car reads like an icon. For a balanced look, pair Eisenbahn with a clean geometric sans serif and let the train dingbats handle the storytelling.
