Author's note

Grimeswade font by PJL is a free gothic initials typeface that turns every capital letter into a tiny, ink-soaked illustration. Each square block feels like a woodcut from an illuminated manuscript: dense black, tangled vines, curling leaves, and mysterious human figures pressed into the corners. The letters don’t just mark the start of a word-they set a mood that’s dark, ornate, and almost theatrical.

This free font shines on fantasy book covers, chapter openers, tarot or oracle cards, gothic event posters, album art, and moody branding for boutiques or apothecary-style products. Using Grimeswade as oversized initials with a simple serif or clean sans for the body copy keeps things legible while letting the artwork steal the spotlight.
