Author's note

Kakuji 1 font by Ayumi Takeshima is a free Asian dingbat typeface that turns every glyph into a compact, maze-like emblem. Bold black strokes lock together into dense squares, giving each symbol the weight of a carved seal or tiled mural. The tight grids and sharp corners create a rhythmic pattern that feels both ancient and ultra-modern, especially when set large so the tiny corridors of white space really show.

Using Kakuji 1 as a visual motif instantly adds a strong East Asian flavor to posters, game titles, album artwork, packaging, and apparel graphics. This free font also works beautifully for icons, pattern-based branding, or decorative borders in zines and flyers. Try pairing Kakuji1 with a clean geometric sans for body text, and keep plenty of breathing room around the symbols so their intricate block forms can stand out.
