Font compression and subsetting solve different problems

WOFF2 compresses stored font data. This page keeps all characters; use the Font Subsetter when removing unused glyphs is acceptable.

Balanced is a safe starting point

It keeps hinting, kerning and essential shaping while removing metadata that most websites do not need.

Smallest needs visual testing

Removing hinting can save more bytes but may affect small text on older or low-resolution screens.

Preserve for specialist typography

Keep every OpenType feature and legacy record when exact behavior matters more than transfer size.

Font compression questions

Does font compression remove characters?

Not in this workflow. Full mode keeps the source character set and verifies generated WOFF2 files after compression.

Why is an already compressed font not much smaller?

WOFF2 is already efficient. Savings depend on the source format and how much optional font data the selected profile can safely remove.

Which profile should I use?

Start with Balanced. Choose Smallest when every kilobyte matters and you can test carefully, or Preserve for complex and specialist typography.
