Author's note

Sumpfdeutschensportschrift SdIN Bold, by Tup Wanders, is a free sports sans serif built around blunt, compact caps and a stripped-back, athletic rhythm. The letters feel pressed into tight rectangular shapes, with deep notches and squared turns that give the font a tough, old-gym poster attitude instead of a neutral modern one.

It fits poster headlines, team branding, event flyers, merch graphics, and title cards where short words need that compressed, hard-edged push. As a free font, it also makes sense for cover lines and monograms, because the caps lock together with a dense, banner-like presence.

In 2022, the Sports division of what was then the Sumpfdeutsche Institut fuer Normung (SdIN) invited a large group of international sports coaches, athletes, fashion designers, referees, and typographers to a seminar in Neuschanz (Gr) to determine whether a common standard could be established for typography on sports outfits.

Referees had for many years complained about the poor legibility of the typefaces used on players’ shirts across a wide variety of sports. A task force of key professionals was selected, and after three years of analysis the group found that very few typographers or type designers were willing to release a design without the ability to monetize it.

The Institute asked local type designer Tup Wanders, known for making all his fonts free and open source, to develop a design. After researching the use of sports typography, watching hundreds of hours of sports footage, and trying some sports himself, Wanders completed a free, open source global definition of the Sportveranstaltungenindustrie-norm in under three days.

All special characters and diacritics used by Latin-script languages have been included. The definition is completely free, rights-free for athletes, sports fans, and organizations to use until 2030, when a follow-up seminar in Neuschanz will consider improvements.
