Author's note

Sumpfdeutschensportschrift SDIN, by Tup Wanders, is a free condensed sans serif with a hard, sports-poster bite. The caps are tall, tightly packed, and sharply squared off, with blunt curves and clipped corners that give the letters a stern, industrial rhythm.

That makes this free font a natural fit for team branding, event posters, magazine cover lines, title cards, and bold merch graphics where space is tight and attitude matters. It also suits short headlines and monograms, because the narrow build keeps words compact while the blocky shapes still feel forceful and unmistakably athletic.

Sumpfdeutschensportschrift SdIN is a free sports sans by Tup Wanders.

In 2022, the Sports division of what was then the Sumpfdeutsche Institut fuer Normung (SdIN) invited a large group of international sports coaches, athletes, fashion designers, referees, and typographers to a seminar in Neuschanz (Gr) to determine whether a common standard could be established for the typography on sports outfits. Referees had long complained about poor legibility of the typefaces used on players’ shirts across a wide variety of sports. A task force of key stakeholders was selected, and after three years of analyzing the different perspectives—and realizing few typographers or type designers were willing to release a design without compensation—the Institute asked local type designer Tup Wanders, known for making all his fonts free and open source, to produce a design.

Wanders conducted extensive research into sports typography, watched hundreds of hours of sports footage, and tried some of the sports himself. He completed a free, open source global definition of the Sportveranstaltungenindustrie-norm in under three days.

All special characters and diacritics for languages that use the Latin script have been included.

It is completely free and rights-free for all athletes, sports fans, and organizations to use. This status will remain until 2030, when a follow-up seminar in Neuschanz is planned to consider possible improvements.
