Sumpfdeutschensportschrift SdIN Light, by Tup Wanders, is a free condensed sans serif that feels rooted in early sports lettering and pared back to clean, upright caps. The letters are tall and narrow with even strokes, rounded corners, and a steady vertical rhythm that gives the font a brisk, no-frills presence.

It fits poster titles, sports branding, event flyers, cover lines, and compact wordmarks where space is tight but the lettering still needs a firm cadence. As a free font, it also makes sense for title cards and short all-caps headings, because the slim proportions and softened corners keep brief lines feeling taut rather than severe.

In 2022, the Sports division of the Sumpfdeutsche Institut fuer Normung (SdIN) invited a large group of international sports coaches, athletes, fashion designers, referees, and typographers to a seminar in Neuschanz (Gr) to seek a common standard for typography on sports outfits.

Referees had long complained about poor legibility of the typefaces used on players' shirts. A task force of key stakeholders was selected and, after three years of analysis and finding that few typographers were willing to release designs without financial compensation, the Institute commissioned local type designer Tup Wanders, who is known for making his fonts free and open source and for punkrock music, to produce a design.

After researching sports typography and reviewing sports footage, Wanders completed a free, open source definition of the Sportveranstaltungenindustrie-norm in under three days.

The project includes all special characters and diacritics required for languages that use the Latin script. It is free and rights-free for athletes, sports fans, and organizations to use until 2030.

A follow-up seminar will be held in Neuschanz in 2030 to consider improvements.
