TTF and OTF are not quality levels

Both formats can contain advanced OpenType data. Changing the extension does not automatically improve a font, and some conversions require outline rebuilding.

01

Convert only when required

Keep the original TTF when your software already supports it. Use OTF output for a specific compatibility need.

02

Watch outline changes

TrueType and PostScript-style outlines use different curve models. A rebuild can introduce small differences.

03

Compare advanced typography

Test kerning, ligatures, scripts and variable axes that matter to your project, even when basic characters match.

TTF to OTF questions

Is OTF always better than TTF?

No. Both can be high-quality OpenType fonts. The best choice depends on the source and what your software or publishing workflow accepts.

Will conversion add OpenType features?

No. Conversion cannot invent ligatures, language support or other features missing from the TTF source.

Can the outlines change?

Yes, when the requested container requires an outline conversion. The report identifies a detectable outline-type change so you can review it.
